Napoli 0-0 Inter: San Paolo Hoodoo Ends But Inter Drop More Points (14 February 2010)

For the second time in four days, the Nerazzurri are held on their travels.

Napoli held champions Inter to a 0-0 draw in Serie A, but they could well have grabbed more, hitting the woodwork twice at the San Paolo.

Marek Hamsik and Fabio Quagliarella both saw shots come back off the frame, whilst Inter's Sulley Muntari had a left foot shot suffer the same fate as both sides found it impossible to earn a breakthrough.

As expected, Mario Balotelli was left out of the Inter 18, whilst Napoli’s Andrea Dossena had to make do with a place on the bench as Salvatore Aronica got the nod on the left of midfield.

The first booking of the game came within 90 seconds as Michele Pazienza’s very high right foot caught Muntari across the top of the chest, and referee Roberto Rosetti showed the Napoli man a yellow card.

The Vesuviani almost created space for the first real chance on five minutes when Hamsik’s vision helped him slot through a pass for Juan Zuniga, but the ball ran just too long for the Colombian as he entered the Inter area unmarked.

They came even closer five minutes later when Walter Gargano’s free-kick from the right was only cleared as far as Hamsik, and the Slovakian hit a right-foot belter against the bar from 30 yards out.

Inter were barely getting a look-in at this point, and clever play by German Denis saw him draw both centre-halves away from an Aronica cross, leaving Quagliarella free at the far post, but his shot hit the side netting rather than troubling Julio Cesar.

Inter’s first half-chance came minutes later, Sulley Muntari stretching to float in a left-footed cross which dropped just over Morgan De Sanctis, but luckily for the Azzurri keeper, the ball landed into space and was eventually cleared.

Napoli continued to dominate for the most part, but couldn’t create an opening, and they nearly paid on the half-hour mark when Muntari struck a left foot shot from a half-cleared corner against De Sanctis’ bar from 30 yards. It was 1-1 in shots against the bar, but the scoreboard remained blank.

The Ghanaian was at the hub of most of the talking points now, and he had a coming together with Quagliarella which resulted in an exchange of handbags between the Inter man and Aronica.

The sides went in at half-time with the scores still level. Walter Mazzarri will have been the happier man in terms of his side’s performance, whereas the 0-0 scoreline must have pleased Jose Mourinho most given the balance of play. Indeed, it was the Portuguese who made a change at the break, bringing on winter signing McDonald Mariga for Muntari.

Inter started with much more vigour and incisiveness after the break. Diego Milito nearly got clean in on goal after a pass from Mariga, but Hugo Campagnaro did well to cover, hustling Milito off the ball before he could get his shot away.

Wesley Sneijder could have landed himself in hot water soon after. On his return from a two-game ban for his derby red card, he could have had another early bath when arriving late into a tackle on Gargano with his studs showing. Rosetti saw fit to brandish only a yellow card as many Napoli players begged for more.

On 62 minutes Milito looked set to give the champions the lead when Mariga’s cut-back found the Argentine free on the edge. He let the ball run across onto his left foot, but delayed his shot, and by the time he got a strike in De Sanctis was able to parry and the danger had gone.

Within seconds Milito got forward again, this time forcing De Sanctis to concede a corner when firing right-footed at the Napoli keeper’s near post. The resulting flag-kick was met by Walter Samuel, who headed just over.

But despite Inter’s pressure during the second half, Napoli had the best chance of the match when Quagliarella’s volley through a crowd from the edge of the box cannoned back off Julio Cesar’s right-hand post and ran into the path of German Denis, who could only screw a left-footed effort high and wide of the open goal. The assistant referee’s flag may well have subsequently been raised on Denis’ effort, but it will still likely appear in a blooper video near you in the near future.

Jose Mourinho made his second change by withdrawing Goran Pandev for Samuel Eto’o in the hope that the Cameroonian striker could provide the spark that the away side had been missing.

But it was Napoli who forged the next opportunity with 12 minutes left, Hamsik meeting a half-cleared cross from Aronica on the edge of the area, but he snatched at the left foot shot and was visibly disappointed with himself as the ball flew wide.

As nerves became fraught, the general quality of the last pass seemed to become more ragged from both sides, with neither looking likely to snatch a late winner. Instead the two sets of players started to take the pace out of the game, clearly worried about throwing away a late goal, with Inter finally picking up a point at their ground of horrors.

Hamsik was at the heart of many of Napoli’s better moments, but couldn’t quite fashion a winning goal.
